CYBERJAYA: Intel Malaysia is targeting 50% of its workforce of more than 10,000 to participate in volunteer-based corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities by year-end.

Intel Corp corporate affairs group vice-president and general manager William A. Swope said Malaysian employee volunteerism was expected to hit the target from 44% currently as the company reinforced its CSR initiatives through various volunteer activities, such as the Volunteer Matching Grant Programme (VMGP).

“In the last four years, Intel employees in Malaysia have contributed RM2mil towards community-based projects and clocked in 40,000 volunteer hours,” he said at a media roundtable on Intel Malaysia’s CSR on Tuesday.

Swope said the VMGP encouraged Intel employees to volunteer in schools and rewarded the schools with a donation based on the amount of time employees volunteered.

“Having our employees work directly with children is a great way to communicate the importance of why science, math, technology and education are important,” he said, adding that about 95% of Intel’s CSR initiatives were focused on education.
