NEWS: Acer, Microsoft open concept store

The Star

KUALA LUMPUR: PC maker Acer Inc and software giant Microsoft Corp have set up a digital lifestyle centre at the Low Yat Plaza here. It is the third such centre in the world by these two vendors, after those in Vietnam and Thailand.

The 2,100sq ft concept store represents a RM500,000 investment by Acer and Microsoft, and is the largest of the centres. It also has two briefing rooms for the companies and their partners to host IT workshops.

Such training sessions would be mainly targeted at parents, students, home users, and the staff of small- and medium-sized businesses, said Christanto Suryadarma, Microsoft Asia Pacific senior regional OEM business manager.

"There are new parental controls within (Microsoft's PC operating system) Windows that parents need to learn about (to help keep children safe on the Internet) while home users can improve their IT skills (by attending the workshops)," he said.

Ricky Tan, Acer sales and services general manager, said the centre also seeks to educate consumers on respecting intellectual property. "Our objective is not to sell but to educate," he said. "However, we hope that our education efforts will also translate into sales."

Acer and Microsoft said they plan to open more lifestyle centres in other parts of the country but declined to elaborate.
