NEWS: Dabong awakes to the info age

KUALA KRAI: Dabong, one of the most backward districts in the country, has been thrust to the forefront of information technology. Its teachers' resource centre has been installed with wireless Internet access with a 1km range.

This effort is part of the Education Ministry's programme to reduce the digital divide between urban and rural areas.

Dabong, a little town some 150km from Kota Baru and a two-hour boat ride from here, becomes the first rural district in the country with wireless access for a range of up to 1km.

The ministry's Educational Technology Division director Yusoff Harun, said the access was not just for teachers but for the community here.

"We will invite everyone – the old and the young – to learn about the Internet."

Dabong assemblyman and Kelantan Umno secretary Datuk Ramzi Ab Rahman who officially opened the event, said the party would work closely with the resource centre to ensure the wireless access was fully utilised.

SMK Dabong student NurAini Bakeri, 17, was excited about the access and said she could not wait to surf the Internet.

She said she had never had a chance to access the Internet at home because she does not have a computer.

"In school, I hope to spend more time on-line since there is wireless technology," NurAini said.

Mukim Gajah Barat deputy headman Ismail Mat Nor, 65, said he plans to enrol in a computer class at the resource centre.

Eventually, he hopes to understand what the fuss is all about.

To date, the division has upgraded 1,584 out of 6,107 computer laboratories in government-aided schools.
